Verses to Pray Before Bible Study

My go to scripture verse to pray before opening my Bible is Psalm 119:18:

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

My desire is that God does a spiritual work in me as I read His inspired words.

I need fresh eyes to see all the wonderful things I can praise Him for.

I need eyes open to the truth of my sin in light of His holy law so I can confess.

Jesus says in Matthew 6:22-23:  The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.  But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

I need Jesus to give me healthy eyes. I have to desire the good and perfect light from above.

And finally, I need this light guiding my eyes continually. I have to go back to this word day after day and keep those eyes healthy and full of that light.

Praying and seeking God’s face before and during Bible study has truly “opened my eyes.” God wants us to know Him more, to grow in wisdom, and to walk in obedience. This is a prayer that He absolutely desires to answer for His children.

Psalm 119:18 – Journal Prompts

I thought to include these journal prompts to help form your own prayer based around Psalm 119:18. When you break it down, you see it communicates a heart to really see God’s Word clearly and to appreciate His precious wisdom.

1. “Open my eyes…”

  • In what areas of my life do I need spiritual clarity or renewed vision?
  • What distractions or heart-postures might be keeping me from seeing God’s truth clearly?

2. “That I may behold…”

  • When was the last time I truly beheld something wonderful in God’s Word? What was it, and how did it impact me?
  • What helps me slow down and really see what God is saying in Scripture?

3. “Wondrous things out of your law…”

  • What “wondrous things” have I discovered in God’s Word recently?
  • How has God taught me through Scripture this week?

4. Personal Reflection

  • Am I approaching God’s Word with expectation or routine? Why?
  • What would change if I approached Scripture daily expecting to see wonders?

5. Prayer Response

  • Write your own prayer asking God to open your eyes—be specific about what you long to see or understand.
  • Is there something God might be inviting me to surrender in order to see more clearly?
prayer before bible study

Lord,

I praise You because You are the Author of truth and the Light that shines in every dark place. Your Word is alive and full of wonders—more precious than gold and sweeter than honey. I’m grateful that You’ve given me access to Your heart through Scripture.

But I confess, God… there are times when I come to Your Word without much hunger. Sometimes my eyes are distracted, my heart is hard, or my mind is elsewhere. Forgive me for the moments I treat Your Word as ordinary, when it’s anything but.

Today, I ask You: open my eyes. Not just physically—but spiritually. Help me see the beauty in Your law, the life in Your commands, and the hope in Your promises. Let Your Word pierce through my fog and speak directly to my soul.

I surrender my expectations, my distractions, and even my need to understand everything right now. Teach me to trust You and to sit with what You show me. Shape me by what I read. Let Your truth change the way I think, live, love, and obey.

I want to behold the wonders of Your Word today, Lord. I’m listening.

Amen.

I love the idea of praying the Word before studying the Word! This spoke to me, friend. Thank you. I’ll be doing this!
