Psalm 145 is a psalm of praise, highlighting God’s greatness, goodness, and faithfulness. One of its central themes is telling future generations about who God is:
“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.” -Psalm 145:4
David knew that faith is not meant to stop with us—it’s meant to be passed on. The next generation needs to see and hear about God’s character, not just from Scripture, but through the living testimony of our words, lives, and past experiences.
We will examine this Psalm along with some practical ways that we can pass along our faith to the next generation. And, not just that, but also teach them the importance of passing on the legacy of faith to all that come after them!

Psalm 145 Teaches Us to Pass Faith on to Future Generations
How Do We Pass On Faith to the Next Generation?
I. We teach them God’s greatness.
Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty— and I will meditate on your wonderful works. They tell of the power of your awesome works—and I will proclaim your great deeds. Psalm 145:3-6 NIV
Teaching God’s greatness to the next generation is both a calling and a privilege. Because, we are imperfect parents pointing them back to a perfect God! Psalm 145 shows us that one generation is meant to “commend” God’s works to another. Here are some practical ways to do that:
1. Share God’s Stories
- From Scripture: Read Bible stories that highlight His greatness (creation, the Red Sea, David and Goliath, Jesus calming the storm).
- From Your Life: Tell children how God has answered prayers, provided, or protected you and showing His greatness.
2. Celebrate God in Creation
- Go outside and point out the stars, sunsets, mountains, rivers, animals—then connect it back to God’s creative power.
- Help kids see that everyday beauty points to a great Creator.
3. Practice Worship Together
- Sing songs of praise as a family—let kids pick songs too.
- Encourage kids to pray aloud simple words of thanks and wonder.
- Short Prayers for Children to Say
4. Pray Over Them
- Speak blessings that remind them of God’s greatness.
- Pray that they would see Him in their lives and grow to love Him deeply.
II. We show them God’s goodness
Psalm 145 overflows with God’s goodness:
“They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made. All your works praise you, Lord; your faithful people extol you.” Psalm 145:7-10 NIV
Here are some practical ways to show God’s goodness to the next generation:
1. Celebrate God’s Daily Gifts
- Point out everyday blessings: food, sunshine, friends, laughter, family.
- Keep a “Goodness Journal” or drawing book where children can record God’s kindness.
- How To Focus On God’s Goodness
Goodness is easier to see when we train our eyes to notice it.
2. Teach God’s Character Clearly
- Use simple phrases kids can remember: “God is kind,” “God is patient,” “God’s love never runs out.”
- Tell Bible stories that highlight His mercy (Jonah, Prodigal Son, Jesus healing).
God’s goodness is not just what He does, but who He is.
3. Model Patience, Mercy, and Love
- When you forgive quickly, show mercy, or respond with gentleness, tell your children: “God is like this with us. He is slow to anger and full of love.”
- Use discipline moments not only to correct but to remind of God’s mercy.
Children understand God’s goodness when they see it lived out in parents, teachers, and mentors.
4. Tell Stories of God’s Goodness in Your Life
- Share moments when God has been merciful, healed, or encouraged you.
- Remind them: “God was good to me then, and He is good to you now.”
Personal testimony makes God’s goodness real and relatable.

III. We tell of God’s faithfulness
The last part of this Psalm celebrates God’s faithfulness to His children. We can use it as a place to start telling of God’s faithfulness.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing. The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does. The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The Lord watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever. Psalm 145:13-21 NIV
1. Tell of His Faithfulness by Scripture Promises
- Read verses about God’s faithfulness (Deut. 7:9, Lam. 3:22–23, 2 Tim. 2:13).
- Remind them, God’s Word teaches that His promises aren’t just old words, they are living and true today.
2. Model Dependence on God
- Use v. 18: “The Lord is near to all who call on him.” Remind them:“We don’t know how this will work out, but God has always been faithful, and He will be again.”
- Let children see you praying about needs and then thanking God when He provides.
- Encourage kids to pray about their worries, tests, friendships, or fears.
- When prayers are answered, celebrate together — but also remind them that God’s faithfulness is shown even when His answers look different.
3. Pass on Faith Stories Beyond Your Family
- Read biographies or missionary stories where God’s faithfulness was clear (Corrie Ten Boom, George Müller, Hudson Taylor). 5 Women Missionaries You Should Know
- Let kids see the bigger picture of God’s faithfulness through history.
4. Tell with Praise
- Teach children to respond like David: “My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.” (v.21)
- Make praise a natural family response when you see God at work.
The calling is clear: to live in such a way that our children, grandchildren, church youth, and community catch a vision of who God is and desire to seek Him for themselves.

Family Rhythm Plan: Living Psalm 145:4
Here’s a weekly family rhythm plan built around Psalm 145:4 that ChatGPT helped me create. The purpose is to help keep the focus on telling the next generation about God’s greatness, goodness, and faithfulness.
The idea is to weave simple, repeatable habits into your week that keep God’s greatness in front of the next generation.
Sunday – Story Night
- Share a Bible story that highlights God’s power and goodness.
- Parents/grandparents add a personal story of God’s faithfulness in their own lives.
- End with a short family prayer of thanks.
Monday – Memory Verse Challenge
- Pick a memory verse.
- Practice saying it together at dinner or bedtime.
- Encourage kids to think of who they could share the verse with this week. (Be creative: A note card, a picture drawing, or even just telling a friend.)
Wednesday – Worship Wednesday
- Play a worship song together (can be traditional hymns, kids’ songs, or modern worship).
- Talk about one word or phrase in the song that describes God’s greatness.
Friday – Faith Jar Friday
- Add at least one new slip of paper or drawing to your “Faith Jar.”
- Share something God did that week (a prayer answered, a moment of joy, an example of His creation).
- Pray over the jar, thanking God for all He has done.
Tips for Keeping It Sustainable
- Keep each practice short (5–10 minutes).
- Let kids take turns leading (reading a verse, picking a song, writing in the jar).
- Celebrate consistency, not perfection—if you miss a day, just pick up again.
