Psalm 30 Devotion and Prayer Guide

Have you ever been in a situation where it looked like the end was near? But then, God shows up and changes the trajectory of your story.

This was the experience of a friend who was faced with a cancer diagnosis and it seemed like her whole world was crumbling right before her eyes. She was 35 with two young children under 10 years.

In Psalm 30, verses 1-3, David clearly captures and expresses the experience and thoughts of this dear sister who eventually received her healing:

I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me. Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit. – Psalm 30:2-3

Psalm 30 devotion

Psalm 30 Background

Psalm 30 also called a Psalm of David was written by the famous King David in the Bible for the dedication of the temple. It is also referred to as a song and psalm of thanksgiving where the writer narrates to the people what God has done to deliver him.

According to Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Psalm 30:

This is a psalm of thanksgiving for the great deliverances which God had wrought for David, penned upon occasion of the dedicating of his house of cedar, and sung in that pious solemnity, though there is not anything in it that has particular reference to that occasion. Some collect from diverse passages in the psalm itself that it was penned upon his recovery from a dangerous fit of sickness, which might happen to be about the time of the dedication of his house.

The structure of Psalm 30:

Verses 1-3 – The writer gives God praise for what he has done for him

Verses 4-5 – He encourages the people to trust in God and sing his praises

Verses 6-7 – He tells a story of his crisis painting a poetic picture of how he had come to trust in his human achievement rather than God.

Verses 8-10 – His prayer and plea to God as he cries out for mercy

Verse 11 – Paints a powerful imagery as he describes his deliverance.

Verse 12 – This psalm concludes as the writer makes a renewed promise to intentionally and continually praise God and always stay thankful.

Lessons from Psalm 30 for Moms

A Heart of Gratitude

I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me.

– Psalm 30:1

Psalm 30 opens our eyes to see into David’s heart as he freely expresses his gratitude to God. Throughout the chapter, we see phrases like ‘you lifted me out of the depths’, ‘you brought me up from the realm of the dead’, ‘you turned my wailing into dancing’, ‘you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy’.

King David remembers and acknowledges all that God has done for him. This fueled his gratitude and thankfulness to God which he boldly declares before the congregation.

Dear Mom, how often do you acknowledge the goodness of God in your life and family? Have you ever taken out time to recount the victories God has given you and the battles he has fought on your behalf?

A grateful heart will find and experience God even in the darkest moments of life. Today, think about how God has showed up for you and your family as a helper and provider and give him thanks.  And just like Hannah, remember to give God thanks for what he has done for you.

My heart rejoices in the LORD! The LORD has made me strong.
Now I have an answer for my enemies; I rejoice because you rescued me. No one is holy like the LORD! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” –
1 Samuel 2:1-2

God Hears Your Desperate Call for Help

Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. you, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit.

– Psalm 30:2-3

I remember Peter walking on the water to meet Jesus and then he began to sink after he observed the wind and waves. As the water drew him in deeper, Peter makes a desperate call for help.

He cries out in Matthew 14:30 – “But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” The bible says in verse 31 – Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

God is a present help in time of need. David tells us how he calls out to God for help in his time of need and also acknowledges that God heals him.

Are you in need of healing, breakthrough or a miracle in your life right now? You can make a desperate call to God for help today. He is a Father whose ears are forever open to your prayers. In the end, may you like David say – Lord thank you for sparing my life and turning my situation around.

Plead your Case before God

To you, Lord, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy: “What is gained if I am silenced, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness? Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me; Lord, be my help.

– Psalm 30:8-10

In these verses, David cries out to God for mercy. And then he says a persuasive prayer as he brings his strong reasons before God. Scriptures tell us to bring our cases before the Lord:

Produce your cause, saith the Lord; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob.” – Isaiah 41:21NIV

“Put me in remembrance, let us argue our case together; State your cause, that you may be proved right” – Isaiah 43:26 NIV

A word came from the lips of the prophet that Hezekiah should put his house in order because he had just a few days to live. The bible says Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and began to plead his case before God. He reminded God of his loyalty and commitment to him. He recounted how he had chosen to remain steadfast in the faith and walk with God.

Then he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the Lord, saying, “Remember now, O Lord, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly. – Isaiah 38:2-6

On the other hand, David was convinced that his presence in the world was value-driven and impactful. Hence, he could confidently say to God – “What will you gain if I die, if I sink into the grave? Can my dust praise you? Can it tell of your faithfulness?” – Psalm 30:9-10 NLT

David knew that the dead cannot praise God or speak of his faithfulness. Only the living can tell of the faithfulness and goodness of God. And so, he spoke those words out fearlessly in his plea for mercy to live again.

What strong reasons do you have to bring before God in times of despair and difficulty? Can you go boldly before the throne of grace and cry out for mercy in time of need?

“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most”Hebrews 4:16

God will give your story a beautiful ending

You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy.

– Psalm 30:11

I personally love the imagery the Psalmist paints here. He tells us how God changes his story from one of mourning into dancing. God did not leave him where he met him. A few verses before this, he spoke these words of assurance to himself – Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. – Psalm 30:5b NIV

No matter how impossible the situation looks or how insurmountable the mountains before you look. Remember this – joy will come with the morning. God will give you victory. He will walk you through the darkest valleys and nights and fill your heart with peace

Your story may even look horrible right now, but know that God is fitting the pieces of your story together and will give your story a beautiful ending. And just like David, you will say how he took away your garments of shame, pain and sorrow and clothed you with peace, love, joy and prosperity.

Psalm 30:11

Questions to Ponder from Psalm 30

  • What strong reasons do you have to bring before God in your time of desperate need? Think about it.
  • How often do you remember to give God thanks for the things he has done for you and your family? Here is another twist to it. How about thanking him for the many things he has saved you and your family from that you may never get to know in your lifetime?
  • Who do you cry out to in moments of pain, helplessness and difficulty? Is your heart turned to men or God?
  • Do you often recount and share personal testimonies of God’s faithfulness in your life to encourage others?
