Teaching Our Kids about the Holy Spirit

We cannot see Him, yet we experience His presence.
We cannot always understand His ways, yet we can trust His guidance.
We cannot fully comprehend His nature, yet we can know Him personally.
He is the Holy Spirit—God with us, in us, and working through us.

It is often difficult for us, let alone kids to understand the Trinity. Often times, God the Father and God the son become clear through Bible lessons and the relational imagery. However, the work and person of the Spirit too commonly remains a mystery. It is not a Sunday School theme that is usually developed.

However, the character and work of the Spirit are fundamental to our sanctification and clear understanding of our Lord. So, I will attempt, rather basically, to provide some rudimentary concepts based on Scripture that will help us explain to our children.

Who Is the Holy Spirit?

Understanding the Character, Role, and Work of the Holy Spirit (For Children)

1. The Character of the Holy Spirit: Who He Is

The Holy Spirit is not an “it” or a magical force. He is God. He is a Person who loves, teaches, helps, and guides us.

The Holy Spirit Is Holy

The word “holy” means perfectly good, pure, and set apart from sin.

“Be holy, because I am holy.” — 1 Peter 1:16

For kids: The Holy Spirit always leads us to do what is right and pleasing to God.

The Holy Spirit Is Our Helper

Jesus called the Holy Spirit our Helper.

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever.” — John 14:16

For kids: When you don’t know what to do, feel scared, or need help obeying God, the Holy Spirit is with you.

The Holy Spirit Is Loving

God’s Spirit fills us with God’s love.

“God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” — Romans 5:5

For kids: The Holy Spirit enables us love God and love others.

2. The Role of the Holy Spirit: What He Does for Us

He Helps Us Understand God’s Word

The Holy Spirit helps us understand what God says in the Bible.

“When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” — John 16:13

For kids: Have you ever read a Bible verse and suddenly understood what it meant? The Holy Spirit helps us learn God’s truth.

He Reminds Us of Jesus’ Teachings

The Holy Spirit helps us remember what Jesus taught.

“The Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” — John 14:26

For kids: When you’re tempted to lie, be mean, or disobey, the Holy Spirit can remind you what Jesus says.

He Helps Us Pray

Sometimes we don’t know what to say to God.

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness.” — Romans 8:26

For kids: When you’re sad, confused, or don’t know how to pray, the Holy Spirit helps you talk to God.

3. The Work of the Holy Spirit: What He Does in Our Lives

Draws Us Near for Salvation

The Holy Spirit helps us recognize that we are sinners in need of Jesus’ free gift of salvation.

But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.  When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. John 16:7-8

For Kids: The Holy Spirit shows us our sin and that righteousness (pure good) is only found when we confess Jesus as Savior.

He Helps Us Become More Like Jesus

The Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out.

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” — Galatians 5:22-23

For kids: The Holy Spirit grows good things in our hearts, just like fruit grows on a tree.

He Gives Us Power to Live for Jesus

The Christian life isn’t something we do alone.

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” — Acts 1:8

For kids: The Holy Spirit gives us courage to obey God, tell others about Jesus, and do what is right.

He Comforts Us

When we are hurting or afraid, the Holy Spirit is with us.

“The Helper, the Holy Spirit…” — John 14:26

For kids: Just as a parent comforts a child, the Holy Spirit comforts God’s children.

Scriptures to Pray When You Need Comfort

He Convicts Us of Sin

The Holy Spirit lovingly shows us when our thoughts, words, or actions do not please God. This is called conviction.

“When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.” — John 16:8

For kids: Have you ever told a lie, disobeyed, or been unkind and felt something inside saying, “That wasn’t right”? If you belong to Jesus, the Holy Spirit may be helping you recognize your sin.

Conviction Is Different Than Condemnation

The Holy Spirit doesn’t point out our sin to make us feel hopeless. He points it out so we can turn back to God and receive His forgiveness.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9

For kids: Think of the Holy Spirit like a loving coach or teacher. When you make a mistake, He doesn’t give up on you. He helps you see what needs to change and shows you the right way to go.

He Leads Us to Repentance

When the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, He is inviting us to say, “I’m sorry, God,” and choose to obey Him instead.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10

For kids: The Holy Spirit helps us stop going the wrong way and start going God’s way.
