The benefits of having a Godly father figure in your child’s life are irreplaceable; a true blessing from the Lord. 

With Father’s Day quickly approaching, many wives are in search of the perfect gift for their husbands. While I’m sure a lot of dads out there would love a new grill or set of golf clubs, perhaps the biggest gift any wife can give to the father of her children is to be in constant prayer for him.

By God’s design, men play a crucial role in leading their families and shaping their children’s lives. God calls them to help meet not only the Spiritual needs of their wives and children by instructing them in the Word, but also to provide for their physical needs. A high calling for sure.

Lifting your husband in prayer each day and asking God to meet his needs is a small step you can take that will make a lasting impact not only in his life but, in turn, in your marriage and family. 

To help wives become more diligent in praying for their husbands, I recently released a book of verses and prayers. Here are 7 Scripture-based prayers for fathers taken from my book, Sanctifying Love, that will help you pray over several areas of his life this week. You may even want to have your children join you in praying the prayers; just substitute “dad” for “husband.”

A Prayer for Prioritizing Family

Verse:

“Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord, offspring, a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons born in one’s youth. Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them.” (CSB) Psalm 127:3-5a

Prayer:

Help my husband prioritize our family. I know it is easy for him to become distracted by his work, friends, or other commitments, but I ask that You show him how much he is needed at home. The time he spends with our family is so precious. Let our house be a place he longs to come home to, and let the people who live in it be a blessing to him. Amen

A Prayer for Trusting God’s Provision

Verse:

”Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying?”

“Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (CSB) Matthew 6:27 & 34

Prayer:

Thank You for being a Father we can turn to in times of need. You know the number of our days and have told us in Your Word that worrying adds nothing to them. I pray that You will be with my husband when he feels unsure about the things going on in his life. There are so many concerns that weigh on him; remind him that You hold all things in Your hands. Amen

A Prayer for Spiritual Growth

Verse:

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (CSB) Matthew 5:16

Prayer:

I pray that You will help my husband become a man who delights in doing Your will. Give him a deep hunger for Your Word, Lord. Fill his heart with love for You, guide his hands to serve You, and lead his feet to walk in Your ways. Let him be a shining light for You in a world filled with so much darkness. Amen

A Prayer for Accountability 

Verse:

“Brothers if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (ESV) Galatians 6:1-2

Prayer:

I know there are times when my husband is tempted to do things he should not. Please surround him with friends who will hold him accountable to the commands of Your Word—brothers in Christ who will listen and share godly advice and wisdom with him. Christian men who understand the importance of putting God first in their lives and boldly walking in Your way. Amen

A Prayer for Financial Concerns

Verse:

“Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than clothing? Consider the birds of the sky: They don’t sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they?” (CSB) 

Matthew 6:25-26

Prayer:

I know that the responsibility of providing for our family’s needs can be overwhelming at times. Please continue to provide my husband with opportunities to earn income so he does not feel burdened by financial stress. We know that You care for all of Your creation—even the birds are fed by Your hand. When anxious thoughts and worry begin to creep in, remind us that You have also promised to provide for our needs. Amen

A Prayer for His Leading in the Home

Verse:

“For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.” (ESV) Ephesians 5:23

Prayer:

When we were married, You gave my husband the responsibility of being the head of our household. Remind him that to lead our family the way You have called him to, he must be a present and active member. Remove the distractions in his life that compete for his attention. Lord, help him use his time wisely and cherish every moment we have together as a family. Amen

A Prayer for Christian Character

Verse:

“The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward.” (ESV) Proverbs 11:18

Prayer:

Please help my husband to always conduct himself in a manner that pleases You. Let him be an honest man, known for doing his work to the best of his ability. Help me be a wife who treats him in ways that reveal my gratitude for a man who provides for our family. Renew his strength, and give him what he needs to do all things for Your glory. Amen

In the weeks leading up to Father’s Day, why not spend some time thanking your husband for all he does, and thanking God for the gift that He has given to you and your children, in your husband.
