Holiness is not perfection—it’s pursuit of One who is Perfect.

To be holy means to be set apart by God, for God, to become like God. It’s saying “yes” to His transforming work in every aspect of your life and being.

The world often defines “goodness” by comparison: better than most, doing your best. But holiness goes deeper—it’s about being different because you belong to a different King.
Holiness is both a gift (what Jesus gives you) and a calling (how you live in response).

When you pursue holiness, you’re not striving to earn God’s love—you’re living from an overflow of the love He has so generously bestowed upon you. His Spirit gently refines you, teaching your heart to love purity, peace, humility, and truth.

Holiness is the quiet beauty of a woman who walks closely with Jesus. These journal prompts are meant to help us dive into our pursuit of holiness a little each day.

Defining Holiness from the Bible

First, we need to have a good idea of what the Bible says about holiness.

1. The Core Meaning

The word holy means “set apart,” “sacred,” or “different.”
It describes something or someone set apart for God’s purposes — distinct from what is common, impure, or sinful.

“For I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy.”
— Leviticus 11:44

So holiness begins with God Himself — His nature is pure, perfect, and completely separate from sin.

2. God’s Holiness

God’s holiness is His absolute moral perfection and complete uniqueness.
He is the One and Only, unchanging, and worthy of worship.

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
— Isaiah 6:3

Holiness isn’t just one attribute of God — it’s the essence of who He is.

3. Our Call to Holiness

Because we are made in God’s image and redeemed by Christ, we’re called to reflect His holiness in our lives.

“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.”
— 1 Peter 1:15–16

That means:

• Living set apart from sin.
• Loving what God loves.
• Letting His Spirit shape our hearts, words, and actions.

4. Holiness Through Christ

We don’t achieve holiness by effort alone — it’s a work of grace.
Through Jesus, believers are both declared holy (justified) and being made holy (sanctified).

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:3

The Holy Spirit empowers us to grow in holiness daily as we read, study, meditate, and apply the truths of His word combined with confession and prayers for holiness — transforming us to become more like Jesus.

1. Defining Holiness

• Read 1 Peter 1:15–16 — “Be holy, because I am holy.”

• How does this verse challenge or inspire you?

• In what areas of your life do you sense God calling you to greater holiness?

2. Set Apart for God

• Read Romans 12:1–2.

• How can you present your body and mind as a living sacrifice to God this week?

• What worldly patterns or influences do you feel called to resist?

• How do you renew your mind with truth?

3. The Beauty of Obedience

• Read John 14:5 & Luke 11:28.

• How do you feel when Jesus says that obedience is a test of your love for Him?

• What is an area where obedience feels difficult right now?

• Write a prayer asking God to give you strength to walk in obedience.

4. Purity of Heart

• Read Psalm 51 — Focus on v. 10: “Create in me a clean heart, O God.”

• What thoughts, habits, or emotions need cleansing?

• How does a pure heart affect your relationships, thoughts, and worship?

5. Holiness in Daily Life

• Read 2 Corinthians 7:1 & 1 Thessalonians 1:7.

• What does holiness look like in your everyday routines (home, work, family, church)?

• How can you reflect Christ’s character in your speech and actions today?

• Think of one small habit that could make your daily life more Christlike.

6. Grace and Growth

• Read Philippians 1:6.

• How does this verse remind you of God’s patience and grace?

• How do you respond when you fall short of holiness?

• What does it look like to pursue holiness without striving in your own strength?

7. Holy Friendships

• Read Psalm 119: 57-64

• How can your friendships help you grow in holiness?

• Who encourages you toward godliness, and how can you thank or encourage her this week?

• What kind of friend do you want to be to others in their walk with God?

8. Reflection and Prayer

• Read Philippians 1:9-11.

• What fruit of holiness have you seen God grow in you recently?

• Where do you still long for transformation?

• Write a prayer surrendering your heart to God’s refining work.
