Psalm 51- A Heart of Repentance

“Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.” -Psalm 51:10 NLT

This is not a cry for a superficial reform but something deep, something lasting. The psalmist is crying out for soul renewal, and inner change!

Only God can complete this kind of transformation in a heart. How can we have a heart of repentance that produces lasting change?

Psalm 51 Repentance

Psalm 51 Background

2 Samuel 11 tells us that King David has committed adultery, murder, and deception. At the end of the chapter, we read in verse 27, “But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.

In the next chapter, we read that God sends the prophet, Nathan, to confront David in his sin. David admits his sin and suffers the consequences of his sins.

Psalm 51 is a prayer of repentance from the pen of King David after his sin against Bathsheba, Uriah, and God. He has come to a place of reckoning and cries to God for forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration.

A Heart of Repentance

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
    let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins
    and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
    or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
    and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
    so that sinners will turn back to you.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
    you who are God my Savior,
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 Open my lips, Lord,
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
    in burnt offerings offered whole;
    then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Understanding Sin

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23 NIV

There are 3 terms that Davide uses for violating God’s law in this passage:

  1. Sin- Missing the mark.
  2. Transgression- Crossing a set boundary.
  3. Iniquity- Twisted or perverse action.

David is very clear in this passage what are the effects of sin and none of them are good. In verses 1-3 and again in verse 7, we are told that sin stains us. Stains are ugly and they make an otherwise unblemished garment look dirty.

In verse 3, David also tells us that sin is rebellion against God. He goes on to describe sin as evil (v.4) and a stealer of joy (v.8). We are born into sin he says in verse 5, but we are still responsible for our actions. He goes on to mourn the worst effects of sin as he closes the prayer and that is that it breaks our fellowship with God (v. 11 ).

Understanding the Nature of Our God

 “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” Hebrews 9:22 NIV

In the same way as there were 3 words for sin, there are also 3 words used for the cleansing that David is asking God to do in his heart. I don’t think it’s a coincidence, David was a true poet.

  1. Blot- To wipe away.
  2. Wash- Intense scrubbing and cleansing.
  3. Purge- To “de-sin.” Hyssop was used to sprinkle blood and purifying water.

God desires purity for His people. His standard is impossible for us to keep on our own, because like David said, we are born into sin. So, how do we stay clean before a holy God?

Well, our God always supplies our needs. He loved us so much that He sent Jesus to make us clean. The only way for you and I to ever be redeemed from sin was for blood to be shed on our behalf.

Because of Jesus, we are able to enter into the presence of God any time and ask for forgiveness and mercy. Hebrews 4:16 NIV says, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Steps for True Repentance

David’s prayer lays a nice pattern for us to follow in order to have a heart of true repentance and to restore our peaceful and joyful fellowship with the Lord.

  1. Honor God and His character. (v.1, 15)
  2. Come humbly and full of remorse. (v.17)
  3. Acknowledge our sin. (v.3)
  4. Be specific about your sin. (v.14)
  5. Admit that our sin was evil and against God. (v.4)
  6. Speak truth. (v.6)
  7. Ask God for cleansing and renewal. (v. 1-2;7-12)
Psalm 51:10-12

Questions for Reflection from Psalm 51

Let’s reflect on David’s heart felt and soul cleansing prayer and truly examine our own hearts and what we might need to confess or how we may need to approach God in repentance.

  1. Do you have a habit of daily confession?
  2. Are you honest with yourself and God about your sins?
  3. Do you acknowledge that all sin is evil and against God?
  4. Do you have a broken spirit that humbly admits to God that you need His cleansing?
  5. What sin have you been failing to bring before God?

    Nothing can compare to the gift God gave us in His Son. That this unworthy sinner, should be redeemed, leaves me without words to describe my level of gratitude. Thanks for this conviction and encouragement!
