Responding to the Savior’s Call

Right after we moved from Canada back to the US, I had a sweet little heart to heart with my then 8 year old daughter. She sincerely wanted to know, “How did you and Daddy know that God wanted you to move?”

She expressed that she was worried when she grew up that she might not be able to know how to listen and obey to who God wanted her to marry, where he wanted her to live, etc.

I think we all get caught up in these kinds of questions and wonderings from time to time. I wanted to remind us, just as I did her…

The future is uncertain, plans change, and the only one who knows is God. In order to hear God well with big life questions, we must daily train ourselves to be attentive to His voice: full of truth, wisdom, goodness, peace and authority.

And, the Bible encourages that being faithful in little prepares us to be faithful in much. So, learning to obey what has been laid out in scriptures ensures that we know how to obey when life choices require understanding, wisdom, and discernment.

This requires disciplined time in His Presence through Bible reading, prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers. The more we train our ear to His voice, the clearer it becomes. The more we obey and respond in faith, the easier it is to know when and how to step out in the faith the next time.

How to Respond to the Savior’s Call

The disciples heard the voice of their Savior, they left all else, and they made the choice to follow faithfully. Their examples show us much of what it looks like to respond when the Savior calls.

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. – Mark 1:16-20 NIV

1. Be Attentive to His Voice in the Ordinary

The disciples weren’t in a synagogue worshipping; they were working. Jesus often calls us in the middle of routine. He used ordinary men for His extraordinary purposes.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27

Reflection Question: Where do I tend to be to busy to hear Jesus most clearly in daily life?

Practical Step: Invite Jesus into every part of your life with continual prayer and awareness or where He is working.

    2. Respond Quickly and Wholeheartedly

The fishermen didn’t overthink or stall—they followed “at once” and “without delay.” Obedience grows stronger when practiced in the moment. God is not calling only “super Christians” to go across the seas, but He is calling the willing to go across the streets.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” — James 1:22

Reflection Question: When have I delayed obedience?

Practical Step: When you hear God calling (to encourage someone, pause for prayer, serve, give), act right away.

    john 10:27

    3. Hold Loosely to Comfort and Security

The fishermen left nets, boats, and family—their livelihood and identity—to follow Jesus. The were willing to step out of the comfortable in order to walk by faith and experience the Presence and power of Jesus.

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.” — Philippians 3:7

Reflection Question: What “nets” (habits, fears, comforts, distractions) may I need to loosen my grip on or give up to follow Jesus more freely?

Practical Step: Ask God what things are hindering your obedience and devotion to Him. Repent of putting anything above or before Jesus.

    4. Live with a Kingdom Purpose

Jesus called the disciples not just to follow and observe but to actively participate in becoming “fishers of men.” He wanted them sharing the good news and actively discipling others to be like Christ.

Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16

Reflection Question: How can I grow in being a “fisher of men”? Who can I share Jesus with this week?

Practical Step: See every conversation and interaction as an opportunity to reflect Jesus.

    5. Walk in Community with Other Believers

Jesus didn’t call just one fisherman; He gathered a group. They learned and did ministry together. They held one another accountable and helped to encourage one another.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” — Hebrews 10:24–25

Reflection Question: How can I strengthen my walk with Christ by walking alongside and with others?

Practical Step: Share life with fellow disciples—encourage, pray, and grow together.

    6. Stay Close to the Savior

Their lives changed not because of a new call or job, but because they stayed with Jesus. Listening and learning to how the Lord wants to change and grow us internally, is so much more important than what we try to externally fix ourselves.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5

Reflection Question: Am I more focused on doing things for Jesus, or on simply being with Him?

Practical Step: Make time for “abiding moments” each day— in Scripture, praying, journaling, or reflective silence—to simply be near Him, not just busy for Him.

    Summary Takeaways:

    • Responding to Jesus’ call is not about grand gestures but daily attentiveness.
    • Responding to the Savior’s call is about listening, obeying, surrendering, living on mission, abiding and walking with others.
    • Like the first disciples, He invites you to follow Him—here and now.
