Winter has this quiet way of reminding us how much we need light. The days shorten, evenings arrive early, and even simple daily tasks become harder in the dimness. You step outside, and everything feels colder, slower, darker.

And yet—every time a light switches on, the room changes instantly.
Darkness never wins that battle.
Light always pushes it back.

The Bible describes God exactly like that: the One who steps into our darkness and changes everything.

God Is Light

John uses light vs. darkness as one of his central theological themes of his gospel. From the opening verses, he makes it clear: Jesus is the Light of God breaking into the darkness of the world.

 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. -John 1:1-5

I want to walk through some central themes of our Lord as Light as we see presented in the book of John.

1. Jesus is the True Light for All People

John 1:9: “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.”

John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

Truths:

• His light shines universally—no one is excluded from the opportunity to be in the light.
• This Light reveals God’s glory through Jesus Christ.
• Jesus isn’t one light among many spiritual options; he is the only light.

2. Jesus’ Light Calls for a Response

John 3:19–21: This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.  Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.  But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

Truths:

• Light exposes truth; darkness hides it.
• Those who live by the light will walk in truth.
• Rejecting Jesus is choosing darkness (evil).

3. Believers Are Invited to Walk in the Light

John 12:35-36, 46: “ Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.  Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light…I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

Truths:

• The Light guides and directs our steps.
• Light isn’t just something we receive but something we reflect and live.
• The light changes us to His beloved children of light.
• We do not have to fear the darkness.

John shows that:

• God is Light — pure, holy, revealing, life-giving.
• Jesus is the visible, eternal Light of God entering human darkness.
• His Light brings life, clarity, truth, and salvation.
• Rejecting Jesus is choosing darkness.
• Following Jesus means walking in light and becoming children of light.

• Where do you currently feel darkness—confusion, exhaustion, fear, or uncertainty?
• How have you seen God’s light break through small moments recently?
• What does it mean to you that darkness cannot overcome His light?

• What areas of your life feel like they need the guidance of Christ’s light?
• In what ways are you still tempted to “walk in darkness”—self-reliance, hurry, worry, or old habits?
• How might your day change if you intentionally followed His light moment by moment?

• What does being a “child of light” look like in your everyday roles (parenting, work, friendships, marriage)?
• How do your words, attitudes, or decisions reflect Christ’s light to others?

“Lord, reveal any areas where I’ve been walking in shadows—fear, worry, control, hidden struggles. Bring them into Your gentle, healing light.”

“Shine Your light on my heart, my home, my decisions, and my relationships. Guide me where You want me to go.”

“Jesus, be light for the people I’m praying for today. Bring clarity. Bring warmth. Bring hope.
Illuminate their darkness with Your presence.”

“I choose to walk in Your light today—one step at a time, trusting You to lead me.”
