Ever lay out clean, matching, comfortable clothes for a child… but the child chooses clothing that doesn’t fit, doesn’t match, or isn’t suitable for the day? Their preference, not what’s best, shaped their choice.
Just like a child choosing clothing that’s too small, not right for the occasion, or just plain crusty… when things get hard, we often choose to go back to our “old man” ways-irritation, exhaustion, impatience, and self-preservation, survival mode-instead of clothing ourselves in compassion, patience, gentleness, peace, and above all… love.
Spiritual maturity is choosing God-approved clothing, not human emotion-approved clothing.
Immaturity chooses what feels good—maturity chooses what represents Jesus.
Colossians 3:12-14 gives us practical wisdom on clothing ourselves in love on the daily. And, in the end, the reward is great because it is the key to “perfect harmony.”

Background on Colossians 3
The book of Colossians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Colossae during a time when heresy was spreading through the area. This letter is a warning sounded by Paul to “faithful saints” in order that they might rely on the sufficiency of Christ and conduct themselves in practice with the doctrines of the faith.
It is a powerfully short letter that has the same message for us today. Christ is supreme. Legalism, carnality, and human philosophies may try to deceive but we hold fast to the message. And, we also live the message in the way that we pursue God and treat others.
Colossians 3 is a contrast between the old man, our lives before Christ, and the new man, our lives after salvation. It offers practical goals in how we live out the gospel on a daily.
Pauls says our most worthy goal being to be “clothed in love”:
“Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.“- Colossians 3:12-14

Lessons from Colossians 3:13-14
How can we clothe ourselves in the the things of Christ…mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and above all love?
1. Relationships Require Patience
“Make allowances for each other’s faults” is how this scripture begins. Some versions say, “Bear with each other…” It is a call to the patience, humility, grace, mercy, and compassion that is mentioned before in verse 12.
Living close to people means rubbing shoulders with their weaknesses—and our own. It’s choosing to extend grace when others are difficult, remembering how patient God has been with us.
Practical Steps:
- Before reacting in frustration, pause and pray, “Lord, give me Your patience right now.”
- Show Kindness and Compassion. The way we treat others reveals the heart of Christ in us. Ephesians 4:32 encourages us “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
- Practice Humility and Gentleness. How we respond to others matters as much as what we say. Philippians 2:3–4 admonishes us “Do nothing out of selfish ambition… rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”
- Treat Others Fairly and with Respect. Justice and fairness are core to God’s character.
In Matthew 7:12 Jesus says,“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.”
2. Forgiveness Reflects God’s Heart
Forgiveness is the language of grace. It doesn’t deny pain—it releases it to the One who heals. When we forgive, we echo the mercy we’ve received. It’s not just an act of kindness; it’s a declaration that God’s grace is greater than any offense.
Forgiving isn’t excusing wrong—it’s freeing your heart from bitterness and mirroring Christ’s love.
Practical Steps:
- Remember God’s Forgiveness Toward Us.
- Focus on Scriptures that teach us Forgiveness Frees the Heart. These remind us that forgiveness releases us from bitterness and opens the way for healing.
- Follow the Example of Jesus.
3. Love Is the Glue That Holds It All Together
Verse 14 calls us to “clothe yourselves in love.” We are told that this is the quality to seek above all and the reason is because it “binds us all in perfect harmony”.
Love is the final layer that completes the outfit of a Christlike heart. It holds every other virtue—kindness, humility, patience—together in unity. Without love, our best efforts fall apart. With love, even broken relationships can be restored.
The good news is though when we choose to live in love, we find that we are bound with others in perfect harmony. This is the great blessing of God to be in peace and unified with others.
“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” — 1 Peter 4:8
Practical Step:
- Ask God each morning to “clothe” you in love before you step into your day.
- Love Others as God Loves You. Love is the foundation of how God asks us to treat people. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
- Serve Others with a Willing Heart. Love in action looks like humble service. Galatians 5:13 says “Serve one another humbly in love.”
Closing Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for loving me with patient, forgiving love. Help me walk in that same love today—with my family, friends, and even those who’ve hurt me. May Your love be what others feel most when they’re near me.
