Teaching Children to Plant Gospel Seeds

God uses seeds, plants, and gardens all through out the Bible to reinforce spiritual truths. When you dive in, its beautiful to think about how God’s creation inspires us to be faithful in producing fruits of righteousness for His glory!

God put the first people, Adam and Eve, in a beautiful garden. I can’t even imagine how amazingly lovely to see, wonderfully fragrant to smell, and delicious to eat all of those plants must have been.

God’s son, Jesus, prayed in a garden before going to the cross. It was a place of solitude, but also had been broken by sin. The Bible says all creature groans to be set free from the bondage of our current decay. (Romans 8:21-22)

If we view God’s world as a great big garden, we see the part we can play as “his gardeners” to spread seeds of good news and help people break free from this darkness and sin. We can help the Master gardener tend His garden and bear fruit for His glory!

How to Teach Children to Plant Gospel Seeds

Let’s explore how we can teach children to plant gospel seeds by exploring that God’s world and the Good News of Jesus are a lot like planting and tending a garden!

🌱 1. Planting Seeds = Sharing the Gospel

When you plant a seed, you’re starting something small—but amazing! Just like that, when you tell someone about Jesus, you’re planting a spiritual seed in their heart.
It might be as simple as saying:

  • “God loves you!”
  • “Jesus is our Savior!”
  • Or inviting a friend to church or Sunday school.

God is proud of our obedience in sharing His good news with others.

🌞 2. Sunshine and Water = Love and Prayer

For a garden to grow, it needs sunlight and water every day.
Guess what? People need care and love to grow in their faith too! That’s where you come in:

  • Be kind and loving—that’s like sunshine.
  • Pray for your friends—that’s like water for the seeds.

God uses your love and prayers to help those seeds grow!

Sample Prayer:

Dear God,
Thank You for Your love. Help me be like a gardener—planting seeds of kindness, watering them with prayer, and shining Your light wherever I go.
Help me grow in faith and share Jesus with others.
Amen.

🌿 3. Weeds and Waiting = Challenges and Patience

Sometimes gardens have weeds or bugs, and it takes time for the plants to grow. In the same way, sometimes it’s hard to wait for people to follow Jesus. But don’t give up!

  • Keep being a good friend.
  • Keep showing God’s love.
  • Trust God to do the growing in their hearts.

You may not see anything happen right away—but God is working!

🌻 4. A Beautiful Harvest = Changed Lives!

One day, the garden is full of flowers, fruits, and vegetables—and it’s beautiful!
When people believe in Jesus, their hearts grow full of joy, kindness, and love. That’s the harvest—and it’s amazing to see how God works through YOU!

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9 NIV

🎉 Remember:

You are a little gardener in God’s big world.
Every time you share the Good News, love someone, or pray for them, you’re helping God’s garden grow. 🌍💚

Let’s go plant some seeds together! 🙌

Scriptures to Remind Us to Planting Gospel Seeds

These scriptures provide Biblical basis for the lesson. You can read them before or after the lesson. They would be great for memory verses or to print and use in the activities below.

  • For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. Isaiah 61:11 NIV
  • Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. John 12:24 NIV
  • Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20 NIV
  • Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 2 Corinthians 9:10 NIV
  • For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 1 Peter 1:23 NIV
  • No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 1 John 3:9 NIV
  • Seed Parables: Matthew 13:1-43, Mark 4, Luke 8, Luke 13

Activities for Kids to Reinforce Spreading Gospel Seeds

🌱 Activity 1: Planting Seeds of Faith

Materials Needed:

  • Small pots or cups
  • Soil
  • Seeds (e.g., flower or vegetable seeds)
  • Markers or stickers for decoration

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Pots: Give each child a small pot or cup. Let them decorate it with markers or stickers to personalize their “faith garden.”
  2. Plant the Seeds: Fill each pot with soil and let the children plant a seed, explaining that just like this seed, sharing God’s love with others helps their faith grow.
  3. Water and Care: Discuss the importance of watering the seed and providing sunlight, drawing parallels to how we nurture our faith through prayer, kindness, and sharing the gospel.

After the activity, gather the children and discuss:

  • How did planting the seed remind you of sharing God’s love?
  • What can we do to help our faith grow, just like we care for the seed?
  • How can we share the gospel with others in our daily lives?

🪴Activity 2: Spreading Gospel Seeds

Supplies Needed:

Construction paper or cardstock

Scissors

Markers or crayons

Glue sticks or tape

Gospel Seeds:

Cut out small seed shapes from paper. On each one, write or let the kids write simple gospel truths, like:

  • “God loves you”
  • “Jesus died for you”
  • “You are never alone”
  • “Jesus is alive!”
  • “You are special to God”

Note: You can pre-print these, or let the children write and decorate them.

Instructions:

  1. Create a Garden Poster
Give each child a sheet of construction paper. At the top, they can write:
    “My Gospel Garden”
Let them draw soil, flowers, sunshine, and even bugs—anything to make it their own!
  2. Scatter Seeds
Have kids glue or tape their “Gospel Seeds” onto their garden. Each seed represents a truth about Jesus they can share.
  3. Talk About It
    Ask:
    • What do these seeds mean?
    • How can we plant gospel seeds in daily life?
    • Who can we share God’s love with this week?

4. Gospel Sharing Challenge: This week, share one of your “gospel seeds” with someone—a friend, sibling, or neighbor.
