Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever! Hebrews 13:8 NIV
It’s a super short verse and most of us have it memorized.
I found myself last week hearing this verse over five times in a span of two days through sermons, devotions, and books I read. I figured the Lord wanted me to take notice so I begin praying through it and studying it.
What is the writer of Hebrews asking us to take notice of here? How can it encourage us in our Christian life?

Hebrews 13 Context and Background
The letter of Hebrews is written to a Jewish Christian group who lived as a minority among mostly non-Christian Jews. Most scholars believe they lived in Rome around 67 to 69 AD.
The intent was to encourage them to remain faithful in their devotion to Christ. Many found it easy to return to the Jewish rituals and way of life in the face of persecution.
The writer reminds them that animal sacrifices can’t save them, but only the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross can forgive and redeem them of sin.
The book holds high the supremacy of Christ and how He is all-sufficient as Priest, King, God, and Savior.
As the letter closes out, the author begins to give instructions for daily living. Between reminding them how to honor God in their relationships (v.1-7) and warnings against false doctrines (v.9-14), comes this short verse 8: Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever!
Lessons from Hebrews 13:8
This verse requires no big explanation. You can explain it by quoting it. It says what it says. However, what it says is BIG! So, let’s focus on some lessons from this short, powerful verse.
1. Big Theological Lesson: Immutability and Divinity of Christ
Immutable means unchanging and unable to be changed. Jesus never changes. Here is more scriptural evidence.
- I the Lord do not change. Malachi 3:6a NIV
- If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot disown himself. 2 Timothy 2:13 NIV
- Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17 NIV
This attribute of unchanging can only be said of God. So, to say Jesus is immutable, is to say that He is God! Here is more scriptural evidence of His divinity:
- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. John 1:1-2 NIV
- “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” John 8:58 NIV
- Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11 NIV
You can always count on Jesus no matter the circumstances, because He does not change. He’s got our past, present, and future all in His hands.

2. Lesson for Hebrew Believers
As we already stated, the Hebrew believers were experiencing persecution so they were tempted to just fall back in line with their Jewish brethren rather that live as outcasts.
The writer wants them to be encouraged that the same Christ that saved them is sustaining them. More than that, He is the same Christ that has been from the beginning of time!
He is the same Yesterday as our Ancient of Days (Daniel 7:9).
He is the same Today as our Very Present Help (Psalm 46:1).
He is the same Forever as the Everlasting Father (Isaiah 9:6)
Christ Himself promised that He would never leave or forsake His followers! We see this theme all through chapter 13, verse 5 says: Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
3. Lesson for Us Today
Theology matters, but Christianity is not just theology, it’s trust, faith, and living out what we say we believe.
Context and history also matter so that we know what the writer meant when they wrote those words. But, God’s word is alive and living and it was written for our benefits as well.
The lesson for us is that Jesus is Trustworthy! He was trustworthy then, he’s trustworthy now, and he’s trustworthy forever and always, not just tomorrow!
Isaiah 26:3-4 encourages, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.”
When you find yourself in times of worry, troubles, temptations, doubts, fears, or any other hard time, remind yourself of this:
He is the God of Yesterday!
- Remember the faithfulness of the Lord to you in the past.
- Dwell on His saving favor of His people all through out eternity. Read the Bible or a great autobiography.
He is the God of Today!
- Count your current blessings.
- Cry out for peace, patience, and wisdom.
He is the God of Forever!
- Commit your future into His hands.
- Remind yourself that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for you and He’s coming back!

Thank you for this detailed post on Hebrews 13:8. God is unchanging and this gives me courage to look forward in faith. He is in control on my now and future.
My pleasure. I’m glad it encouraged you as well.
John 1:1 is one of my favorite verses to keep close to heart as well. It is so amazing to me to think that the Word was in the beginning, even before He became flesh, was born, and dwelled with us.
Amen!
