Are you getting tired of the same candy, flowers, & crafts for V-day? I have put together a list of creative, easy, and frugal ways to show love to your family on Valentine’s Day. These ideas are fun. There are links to some dinner ideas, free printables, and some creative games. I hope you family enjoys these and feels the love.

Quick Backstory on Valentine’s Day

The origins of Valentine’s Day don’t exactly scream love or do they? If you don’t know, Valentine of Terni was a Roman Priest during the the reign of Emperor Claudius in the late 200’s A.D. The Roman’s had a law at the time that prohibited the marriage of young people. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died. Valentine was of the mind that marriage was sacred before God and so he secretly married many young couples. Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of the emperor.

I think there is lots of love in this story. There is the love of the young people. There is the love of this priest for his people. But mostly, there is the love of God. St. Valentine was willing to defy Rome in order to obey his conviction of God’s law. Jesus said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)

So, while I know some don’t like the idea of celebrating Valentine’s Day, I think that taking time to show those around you how much you love them is an excellent idea and there is nothing wrong with giving it a special day of focus.

And, quickly, sometimes we just don’t feel loved or have anyone with to celebrate. If that’s you, please be encouraged that the Lord loves you. Please check out this post Reminded of God’s Love.

  1. I love the idea of doing a count-down with a “why I love you” list. I am not a big Valentine’s girl but my husband loves romantic gestures and words of affirmation, so I might steal this one!
